About

SHORT

Connor Cummins (b. 1998) is a composer, music educator, and multi-instrumentalist based in Detroit, Michigan. His work is a culmination of his wide range of musical experiences— wind band, jazz band, choir, orchestra, and drumline— as well as his range of roles in those experiences— teacher, student, performer, listener, creator, analyst, and overall appreciator. He aims to use this varied background to express a unique voice that encourages others to stop and appreciate the experiences of the lives they’ve had, are having, and will have, as well as to reflect on how those experiences fit into their story, how they have shaped them previously, and how they will shape them moving forward.

LONG

Connor Cummins (b. 1998) is a composer, music educator, and multi-instrumentalist based in Detroit, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Music Education in Instrumental Music Education and a Bachelor of Music in Theory / Composition from Central Michigan University, where he studied composition with Dr. Jay Batzner, Dr. José-Luis Maúrtua, and Dr. Evan Ware, as well as bassoon with MaryBeth Minnis.

Primarily a bassoonist, Connor has spent extensive time in several types of ensembles, including choir, wind band, jazz band, orchestra, and marching band / drumline. Connor credits this wide range of experiences as the foundation for his holistic perspective on teaching, writing, and philosophizing about music.

He was the winner of the 2019 ACDA Choral Composition Competition at Central Michigan University and has been commissioned by groups around Michigan to write both chamber and large ensemble music.

Connor currently resides in Shelby Township, Michigan, with his tortoise, Buddy, and his collection of obscure and less common wind instruments. When not composing or teaching music, you can find him hanging out with friends, playing Magic: the Gathering, watching psychological horror movies, going to stand-up comedy shows, or yearning to one day own a Heckelphone.
